Living Better Podcast – Ep 9 – How to overcome fear

How do you overcome fear?

At some point, we’re all afraid of something. Load up enough weight on a back squat, stack up to a high enough box, or try a new skill (like a muscle up), and there it is. It’s the feeling “this might not go well for me”, “I might get hurt”, or “maybe I should play it safe”. Fear is always at play when you’re training hard, whether it’s on day one or year 7. If you’ve never felt it, you aren’t pushing yourself hard enough.jonnylog

The thing is, you need that fear. That fear breaks you out of your comfort zone and gets you to the next level of your training. Nothing worth having in life doesn’t have some sort of fear attached to it. The key is figuring out how to get past it.

We talk to Jonny again in today’s episode. It’s all the strategies and tips we’ve used with our athletes and ourselves to overcome fear and continue to make progress

Phil’s Story

Phil Morton has been doing CrossFit since 2009, and started as one of the original members of Thames CrossFit. At 59kg (133 lbs), he was a skinny guy who’s idea of fitness was running long distances.

Hear the story of how he started, what his biggest challenges were, and how cutting out all long distance work and training with weights improved his endurance.

Living Better Podcast – Ep5 – Developing Mental Toughness

The best part about training hard and overcoming obstacles at the gym is what it teaches you about yourself. Hard fought mental toughness developed at the gym extends to every area of your life. Ever finish a workout, then go to work and think “nothing can be as bad as that workout, I’m going to CRUSH this day!”? Those are my favorite days.mental toughness

Every time you learn a new skill you’ve been working hard on, set a new PR on a lift, or finish a workout you wanted to quit on, you are getting stronger. Today’s podcast explains what mental toughness is, why it’s important, and how you can develop more.

What should I do if I’m injured?

Often we get people with small aches and pains who ask “should I train if this hurts?”. Soreness and aches and pains are part of getting older, and whether you get them at the gym or in your day to day life, it’s important to know how to deal with them.

In general, we recommend people see a doctor before deciding whether to train or not. However, in most cases small aches and pains and soreness are normal parts of everyday life, and should not completely derail your training.

In this podcast, we talk about the different types of injuries, go through some rules of thumb about when to train around those injuries, and give you some ideas on how to avoid them in the first place.

Living Better Podcast – Ep2 – How often should I work out?

How often should I work out to get the best results?

The answer is…it depends (it’s never that easy). We talk about and suggest training schedules for different types of athletes, from beginners to experienced CrossFitters. We also discuss the key workouts that everyone should be hitting at least once per week.
